Disaster Readiness: A Personal and Comprehensive Guide

Homes flooded during a hurricane in Florida

In today’s unpredictable world, disaster readiness isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. As life can change in an instant, ensuring your family’s safety and financial security is crucial. If living in Florida has taught me anything, it’s that life can change in an instant, as it did for me when I was 9 years old living in Homestead, Florida, the epicenter of destruction for Hurricane Andrew.  The same can be said for the victims of many recent major hurricanes , such as Hurricane Ian, Hurricane Helene, and Hurricane Milton, as well as others.

I’ve created this guide to walk you through the practical steps to prepare for any emergency, from safeguarding your home to protecting your future. Together, we’ll explore how to stay ready, no matter what life throws your way.

Your First Steps to Disaster Readiness

  1. Create a Disaster Readiness Go-Bag: Your Lifeline in an Emergency

One of the most important steps is putting together a “go-bag.” This kit should contain everything you need to get through at least three days following a disaster. Pack essential items like clothing, toiletries, medications, and non-perishable food. Don’t forget a water filtration device or bottled water. Keep digital and physical copies of important documents like IDs, insurance policies, and family photos. I always recommend having some cash in small denominations, as ATMs and card systems might be down.

At Rodriguez | Marrero, P.A., we provide clients with a digital copy of their critical documents, and we store these electronically for safekeeping. Place your go-bag near the main exit of your home so it’s ready if you need to leave quickly.

  2. Stock Up on Essentials

Beyond the go-bag, you should keep a 1-3 month supply of non-perishable food and water at home. If a long-term emergency arises, having a generator or solar power equipment can provide vital energy. Investing in a good water filtration system can make sure you have access to clean water, even if public systems fail.

  3. Plan for Extended Independence

If a disaster forces you out of your home for a few weeks or more, having the right gear is key. Invest in camping supplies, water filters, and mobile cooking equipment. In your community, identify safe locations where you could stay and plan routes to get there. Some people even invest in camper vans for added mobility and flexibility in an emergency. Having a plan like this can provide peace of mind.

Disaster Readiness: Securing Your Financial Future

  1. Smart Cash Management

Keep between $1,000 to $20,000 in small bills at home, safely stored. I recommend maintaining 1-12 months of living expenses in a local bank account as well—just be mindful of FDIC limits. The exact amount depends on your personal situation, but having quick access to cash is crucial in a crisis.

  2. Review Your Insurance Policies

Your homeowners’ insurance should fully cover the cost to replace your home and its contents, as well as provide “loss-of-use” coverage for living expenses while repairs are made. Buy any necessary additional policies—such as earthquake, flood, or windstorm insurance—depending on where you live.  Consult with an experienced insurance claims attorney, like our very own Franchesca Marrero, in case have any questions about your policy, and especially before you file an insurance claim.  Insurance companies, especially in Florida, are notorious for underpaying or unjustifiably denying claims.  Seek legal advice before you file a claim; I cannot stress this enough.

  3. Create a Life & Legacy Plan

This is where I can help you the most. At Rodriguez | Marrero, P.A., we specialize in creating personalized estate plans, what I call a “Life & Legacy Plan.” This ensures your assets are protected, your family is taken care of, and your wishes are honored, even in the face of incapacity or death. We’ll work together to ensure that your loved ones don’t end up in court or conflict.

Investing in Human Capital

Once you’ve got the basics covered, invest in the people around you. Support those who help care for your family, build relationships with local farmers, and surround yourself with trusted advisors. In the end, it’s the people—not just the money—that will help you through any crisis.

Final Thoughts on Disaster Readiness

The most precious things in life, like family memories, are often irreplaceable. Digitize your old photo albums, home videos, and important documents, and store them in the cloud for safekeeping. And remember, your disaster preparedness plan is a living document; review and update it regularly as your life changes.
